Weekend races

2001 Blue Boar Beach Run

For folks who were out-of-shape for not having sailed for 6 months there was plenty of wind, though probably not more than 12mph. This year we had permission to be on the beach that we have long used for the mid-way party.
Either Mark is slowing down or he did not want to give up too much in the way of time on the return race because he arrived at the beach only 9 seconds ahead of Rolf. Maybe Rolf is getting a lot faster?
Glenn had a spell of diziness on the way to the beach (diabetic insulin reaction) and lost a lot of time chewing on a powerbar. This gave him an advantage for the return race (because of the reverse-order-of-finish handicap start) that Mark almost overcame. Mark however, had left his harness on the beach and though ahead of Glenn near the end was too tired to hold his position on the last two tacks in the main lake's open water, giving Glenn the chance to win by a small margin.

Crown Beach, Alameda 28-Apr, 2001

There was little water near the beach until 2PM, but at that time the wind was 15-22mph (according to iwindsurf.com's report). The temperature was low until about 4 when the sun came out. The water stayed cold!

Winds were quite light at the 1:30PM start and rose slowly to about 7 - 10 mph. Mark made his usual fast passage to the party beach (Which won for him the first pick of the 3 prizes. This is the anti-sandbagging rule.) Glenn sailed almost constantly in company with Dick Brundle until they encountered Martin Taylor, Glenn's 11 year old son, who was sailing to the party beach and was having trouble with the one upwind segment of his voyage. Glenn and Martin walked to the party, then Kris Taylor drove Glenn back to the boards. Glenn started with Dick Brundle on the handicapped return race. The wind had picked up a little but not enough to enable Al and Mark to make up the time given to the first starters via the handicap adjustment. Ron maintained almost all of his lead over Dick and Glenn on the return and won easily.
