August

On Aug 4, 1998 we sailed the Tuesday night races at Coyote Point, meeting on the street near ASD sailboards. Wind was great, 12-15mph, and there were a few waves too. Water was VERY warm; you could swim without a wetsuit! The air was nice and cool, about 79, on a day when the rest of the Bay Area was experiencing record high temperatures (over 112 degrees in parts of the East Bay.)

July

Weeds in the lake became a problem in our July races, prompting the following from Rolf:

Due to abnormally strong weed growth in the Ryan lagoon (blame it on El Nino), we have decided to move the Tuesday Night Races to Coyote Point starting with the first Tuesday in August (August 4) and through the last race in September. We will meet at the west shore of Coyote Point Bay (Near ASD). Do not go into the park (unless you prefer to launch from that pristine beach), drive around the west side of the bay and look for us North of the animal shelter.

Winds tend to be stronger at Coyote Point than in the lagoon. Also, the Bay is considerably colder, so don't forget your wet suits.

Blue Boar Beach Run, March 14, 1998

The season opener race is over the same course as the end of season race. The race starts at the Foster City boat ramp and goes windward to the amphitheater mark. The course then goes around the east supports of the Shell Blvd. Bridge and then to the little beach at the far Southwest end of Foster City's Lagoon. A return race is run from the beach with reverse-order-of finish starts. The season closer has always been the "Margarita Run", this race is named after a different beverage that has a blue boar on its label.

Going to the beach, winds were medium to light, in the 5-10 mph range. The return saw 10-13mph. The reverse order of finish advantage that a late arrival on the first leg gave was hard to beat with the increased wind on the return. But rules are rules and the Winner was Keith Walker who had tied for last with second place Dave Snoek getting to the beach.

The scoring in the last column below reflects Mark and Rolf's ideas about how the event could be scored with a change in rules to accomodate an averaging of the two races like a conventional regatta. Hey guys, forget it! This is supposed to be an oddball, fun, race that gives rank beginners and duffers a chance!

Crown Memorial Beach, April 11, 1998

El Nino was playing tricks on us on the morning of the first 1998 Fleet 18 Series race: still air and pouring rain. Some of us may have just turned over in their beds, decided that this ain't the weather for windsurfing and slept through the rest of the day. Well, a small but fine group of dedicated 18'ers showed up for what turned out to be one of the best Crown Beach conditions the Fleet has seen to date: sunshine from noon on and excellent wind from about 2 o'clock on. Except for Mark, we were all still tinkering with our new Superlight II equipment. Ray delivered the last batch of stuff (the correct adjustable outhaul). Spike brought centerboard dowls for everybody (these prevent dropping the centerboard into the board in the heat of a race without hope for retrieval), and cookies (thank you, Spike !).

About 2 o'clock, the wind began to fill in very nicely from NW and we started our first race in about 15 miles/hr wind. Starting at the usual spot by the 'birds nest', the weather leg was the first channel marker of the Alameda harbor. Mark and Ray left everybody else pretty much in the 'dust'. The reaching mark had to be an imaginary mark once we realized that the permanent mark we had come to expect in previous years had vanished. So Mark and Ray jibed at the approximate spot and left a trace for everybody to follow. From there we went to a leeward mark we had set between the starting line and the beach.

The course for the second race was changed to a simple sausage to avoid any ambiguity an imaginary mark adds to tight racing. By the start of the 2nd race, the wind had added a couple of clicks and for some of us the conditions became very challenging with the new boards. Many of us chalked off the race as a learning-curve experience. Mark had of course no problems. Ray on the other hand, was beginning to feel the pressure. Rolf finished a close third behind him considerably closing the distance of the first race. Hold on, Ray !

By now the wind had reached the over 20 miles/hr mark and some of us felt compelled to have lunch. A few of us had a great time playing with the new equipment and finding out that the Superlight II behaves much like a short board on the reach in these winds when you pull the mast all the way back in the track ! Unfortunately, Mark ended up with a small cut in his sail (put there by the fin of Rolf's board while the two were trying to correct some rigging problems on Rolf's board).

All in all, we had fun and are looking forward to the next time at Crown Beach.

Berkeley, April 25

When the fleet showed up at 12:30 the Berkeley Marina was busy with races... outrigger canoe races! 20 or more 6 person canoes and as many one person canoes were having 8 mile races starting off the sailboard dock and going to Treasure Island and back. Considering the situation we Fleet 18 members felt that the canoes would be out of the water pretty soon, it was not likely that many participants would care to paddle a 2 or 3 race series at such distances. We were correct and we started at about 2:30 in wind of 15mph. Wind dwindled over the next 3 hours but there were planing puffs right to the end.

The second and third races had a newcomer, Bernard Dunayevich, racing with us on a Lechner sailboard. Lechners are super swift upwind but notoriously hard to sail downwind. Bernard took the downwinds and reaches in stride and led the fleet at least 2 marks each race. Had Bernard not made a course error on the third race he would have won that race.

Crazy from the Heat Regatta, Lake del Valle 7-11-1998

We sailed four triangle races on Saturday and a long distance race on Sunday. And yes, it was hot ! The wind on Saturday was pretty typical for Del Valle although not quite as strong as it could have been. We found the new folks at Windsurf del Valle very helpful. Mostly a guy with the name Bill who even joined us in the last race. The races started a bit late (around 2:30) due to Rolf's setting up his Hobie and Ray arriving late, but the wind was more consistent by then anyway. After a warm-up race, Ray turned invincible and left the rest of us in the dust and sailed home with yet another victory in the '98 series.

Several of us set up camp at the Del Valle campground at the group camp site Mark had reserved. It turned out to be a very good site, although with limited parking (2 cars), so we had to start a shuttle service to the overflow parking area. The next morning the hardcore of Fleet 18 decided to sail a long distance race to the dam and back. The wind was quite light and it took us over 2 hours. Dan had a considerable lead up to about the last 50 yards of the mark by the dam. Rolf took advantage of a wind shift and beat Dan to the mark and didn't give Dan a chance to take over on the downwind leg. Of course, it didn't help that Dan decided to cool off by plunging into the lake at one point. Dave sailed a very strong upwind leg and stayed on Rolf's tail until he fell prey to the cyclone that awaited those of us who came to close to the west shore before the last turn toward the weather mark. Despite this, he was still ahead of Keith. Then, on the downwind leg he got distracted by two sirens who had parked their canoes along the west shore. Keith took advantage of his temporary lapse of reason and sailed by.

The order of the finishers of the long distance race:

Rolf Jaeger, Dan Colton, Keith Walker, Dave Snoek (bravo Dave !)

Comment by Dave S.... Hey, lets set the record straight. The sirens were paddling and I sailed between them. The end result was correct!

 Tinsley Island

Report by Rolf...

"Tinsley Island is a great island resort, almost invisibly tucked away behind the trees of a typical Delta island. The unsuspecting sailor would not find this incredible park on this island (it shows that the St. Francis Yacht Club owns and maintains it). The people were VERY friendly; John Callahan was running the races and gave us a warm reception. Teddy was also on the race committee boat (he still is (and will be for another couple of months) recovering from a bike accident). The race fee was $10; in addition, we had to pay $13.50 for island use (this would have included a night in the bunk-bed house). So it ain't cheap, but it was well worth it.

The course was set just outside their western harbor. It was a rather short linear course: weather mark, leward mark, finish; two rounds only in one race; the last race around the island. We had great wind and sailed about 6 or seven races. Unfortunately, Fleet 18 participated only with 4 racers (3 on Saturday (Mark, Fung and Rolf), 2 on Sunday (Fung and Ray). Because of this relatively low attendace, Mark and I agreed not to score this race as one of our series races (darn, I beat Mark in this one !), but strongly recommend to make it part of our series (assuming that we will again get invited which is a pretty safe assumption, I think, as we behaved ourselved very well (can't speak for Ray though; always a concern (just kidding ...). We would like to see a strong showing of the Fleet next year. It will be well worth our time !"

Report by Ray Domingo...

"This is the results that I remember from the Tinsley's (in all the world there's only one) regatta:

  1. 1. The cover girl J.

  2. 2. Skinny Al
  3. 3. Skinner Steve
  4. 4 Skinner yet John C.
  5. 5. Hong Kong - Fung
  6. 6. Don't remember
  7. 7. Fleet 18 high wind, short and long course specialist Rolf
  8. 8. Fleet 18 Prez. Mark
  9. 9. Not announced
  10. 10. not again
  11. 11.not last; fell in three times in the free style Ray, but looks promising.

The race on Sunday was a pump fest with Fung turning the weather mark first and a big lead over J. but being the gentleman he is fell in to let the cover girl Jessica win. The rest of the day was the triple points free style competition won by J's friend Jenny with her sailing with her feet impression of Pres. Clinton and Monica (I hope this comment is not libalist).

I talked to some people at Herman and Helen's; to rent jetski is $250 a day. A 54 foot houseboat rents for $2000 a week.

They said it was windy on Saturday and it was confirmed by the race committiee. One of the next races I'm going to bring some food and stay on the island for a couple of days but maybe not.

See ya at Benicia, Ray"

Benicia 1998

Weather was beautiful for the Benicia race this year, though the wind never got beyond about 12. The first two races were big triangles, going all the way across to the south side of the the strait. Races 3 and 4 were upwind/downwind sausages (as wind was decreasing.).

Weekend Series Score

The formula for the points for each series is now as follows:
- each sailor racing a series race gets (N-Place)/N points, where N is the total number of racers attending the series throughout the year (that means it will hopefully increase as the year goes by and more people come out of the woodworks; that of course means that I will have to update the series standing as additional people get added);
- DNS for a series race results in 0 points

Doing it this way gives anybody showing up for a series race and finishing at least one race a significant advantage over anybody who did not sail the race at all.

Signed, Rolf
