April 8, 1997.

On the first Tuesday after the start of Daylight Savings Time six Fleet 18 members showed up at the Foster City boat ramp for the beginning of another summer of evening races. Before launching any of the marks Dan Colton measured the wind. His readings showed it to be 30mph with gusts over 40mph! We figured that if we had 2.5 sq. meter sails we might have a good time. If we had 4 sq. meter sails we might sail. Since we had 6.3 to 7.4 sq. meter sails we decided to have pizza and beer a little early.

Weekend Events

Blue Boar Beach Run, March 15, 1997.

For the past 10 or more years, the "Margarita Run" has been our end-of-season event. This year we staged a season opener on the same course. The race starts at the Foster City boat ramp and goes windward to the amphitheater mark. The course then goes around the east supports of the Shell Blvd. Bridge and then to the little beach at the far Southwest end of Foster City's Lagoon where a beach party featuring Blue Boar Beer is held. A return race is run from the beach with reverse-order-of finish starts. The early finishers at the beach are handicapped by starting after the later finishers with the lag in their start times being the time between them and their following finisher. Mark Zimmer, who was first at the beach, was therefore required to wait 29:07 minutes after Jeff Dahm had made his start.

Keith Walker was the first place finisher back to the boat ramp. The only prize we had to give away was a second place trophy which went to Dave Snoek.

Crown Beach, Alameda, April 25, 1997

The wind was light when fleetmembers showed up at 12 noon. The first race, run at 2:30, had rising wind estimated at about 12mph. The wind built up during the race until it was more than 15 mph. The second race had wind that steadily lightnened. Wind was no more than 10 at the start of the third race and it got lighter, making it hard. The waves were the size that a 15 mph wind would produce but at the end the wind was only 2-4mph. "Leftover Waves" make hard conditions.

Dan and Mark were way ahead of Glenn, usually by about a full leg of the course! Dan was sailing an IMCO with a 7.4 sq. m. sail, while Mark and everyone else were on Superlights with the stock 6.3 sq. m.

Benecia 97 Photos

Windsurfer Classic, Foster City, August 2, 1997

This year 6 sailors turned out to race classic, standard Windsurfer(TM) sailboards. Dennis Coburn came down from Reno and sailed the oldest craft, a Freestyle with a 6 digit sail number Dacron sail. Dennis seemed to tire less than the rest of us in the gusty 12-15mph wind and was moving up race by race. The rest of the fleet had One Design type hulls equipped with the Mylar laminate sails that were the standard when the craft was discontinued.

 Race one of the 1997 Santa Cruz regatta was great! Wind was 15+ mph and waves were small. We ripped on the reach to the Mile Bouy. Now if only we could have gotten our acts together for another race before the wind quit...
