April, 1999

The first scheduled Tuesday night regatta was set to occur at Coyote Point on April 6. Rolf Jaeger and Dan Colton showed up but no one else did. The air temp was somewhere south of 55 F. and the wind was near zero. The participation on this evening proved that the majority of Fleet 18 is composed of sensible people.

The second race of the new season was on April 13 at Foster City. The air temperature was summerlike and most sailors did not don wetsuits. Wind was excellent, 10-12 mph.

April 20 was at Coyote Pt. and there was too much wind and waves too high to set marks.(Wind 15-25mph)We sailed but did not race.

Wow, heavy wind at Foster City on April 27. If you raced you were a champion.

Blue Boar Beach Run, March 13, 1999

The first race of the 1999 season. The course is the one we have used in our season closer, the Margarita Run. We always have a reverse-order-of-finish start on this course with the person who finishes last on the way to the beach given the chance to start first on the race back. For the return race the time difference for each subsequent finisher is used as the delay between that person's start time and the one before him.

The wind at the start was NE at about 5-10mph. Three fourths of the way to the beach, Mark, who was well ahead, slowed down to keep his time penalty for the return race to a minimum... this is called "sandbagging". The time differences for the first 5 finishers were within a minute and a half. Mark took about 58 minutes to complete his race.

The party on the beach was highlighted with great (though weirdly combined) food! Ray Domingo brought his homemade sushi and wasabi. Rolf and Dan brought excellent cheese, and there were girl scout cookies to go with the Blue Boar beer!

The wind rose as we partied and for most of the return race it was NW gusting 5 to 15+ mph. It was tricky under the bridges and several leaders were passed when they spent too much time swimming. Al's win was not a surprise even though he had to wait 15 minutes and 13 seconds after Keith Walker's start before he could begin his return race. Keith held onto most of his lead on the return, however, and placed a respectable 3rd.

Thanks to Kris Taylor who recorded the times.

Crown Memorial Beach, Alameda, April 17, 1999

A beautiful sunny day with light, but steady, wind. Wind for the first race was about 6 mph and was about 10 mph for the last race. We kept the courses short in order to gain the most from start practice. 3 of the 5 races were on upwind-downwind (sausage) courses, the others were on simple triangles.

Mark had to leave early, giving the top spot for the day to Ray.

Woodward - May 15, 1999

Woodward at its best ! Great wind (with interesting shifts !), sunshine and just the right temperature. Unfortunately, only 4 of us showed up, but we had a wonderful time. Spike showed us all how to sail that course. He seemed almost always to sail just the right tack. In the last race, he magically edged out Rolf (who had taken the lead (after a long chase) one tack after the last mark) on a side by side finish with Rolf unable to make the leeward mark of the finish line and losing one more place to Keith. Ouch !

Woodward Reservoir, 1999

Coyote Point  - June 5, 1999

The Fleet's first attempt at a weekend race at Coyote Point was met with Mother Nature's forceful welcome. It was howling ! Five of us showed up and finished the first race. The weather mark was pretty far off the ideal point (Rolf did it !) and most of us overstood it. Dan must have eagle eyes. He did not skip a beat, made it to the mark far ahead of the rest and sailed off to an unchallenged first place. Congratulations (and if just for being so good at finding that mark; just kidding). We started a second race, but only Mark and Rolf made it to the finish. The rest of us went back to shore with fear in their eyes (except for Doming; see below). Mark was first at the weather mark, but then fell. Rolf had again difficulties finding the mark, but rounded it just a bit after mark, passed Mark without falling and didn't see Mark again for quite some time. In fact it looked to him as if everybody had abandoned the race. Mark was nowhere to be seen. The second downhill leg was sheer survival with plenty of adrenaline and numerous extreme launches. Anyway, thinking he had a clear win on his hands, Rolf eased of a bit (or got tired ?), got surprised Mark who reappeared out of nowhere just a bit before the last mark and bit him to the finish. Oh, well ! Mark Mark and Rolf went at it for another 2 races with rather close finishes and then their arms almost fell off.

At the end of the day, Domingo seemed lost 'at sea'. Mark and Rolf looked for him for quite some time. Mark even sailed back out to make sure Domingo was not in sight. We were about to call the Coast Guard when Domingo arrived happily on his board from an afternoon stroll with Teddy Huang and Fung Yang. Mark red him the riot act for leaving us in the dark about his whereabouts (hopefully a lesson for all !).

Overall, the Windwing sails were clearly the choice of the day. Even Domingo sailed his. It was lots of fun (but scary).

Benicia

Fleet 18 had great sunny day at the Benicia beach. The wind was 9-12mph, varying slowly in speed and very steady in direction so there were few shifts to play. The current for the first two races was flooding enough to make going toward the channel center risky but most of the course was set toward the North shore so a channel route was not required. The toughest time was had by the beach loungers who had their sand restricted by the rather high tide to a 10 foot zone below the cliff.

Rolf had just flown back from a 4 week stay in Germany. Jet lag took its toll and lowered his score.

1999 Margarita Run, Sept. 25, 1999

"Nice weather, moderate wind and a huge Thermos of Margarita mix!" is a summary of the 1999 season's last race. As always the return race from the far SW end of the Foster City Lagoon has a reverse order of finish start to give the slow sailors (or sandbaggers) of the first race a good head start to help them win on the return. Mark moved up five places from his last place start and that was good but not enough to best the 4 minute lead Al got at the start. (Al moved up 5 places as well.)
